What is it like for the Sperm Donor? (Part 1)

Written by CLI Laboratory Director, Michelle Ottey, PhD.

The experience for the sperm donor will vary from sperm bank to sperm bank, but I can describe how it works at our Cryobank.

A man who is interested in becoming a sperm donor has to go through a rigorous screening process before he ever steps foot in the clinic. Typically the men apply online, fill out a follow up medical application online, then wait to hear if they will be invited to screen at the clinic.

When they are invited to screen at the clinic, they are given a tour of the facility and a brief description of the program. They see the donor rooms, have an opportunity to ask questions, and then they receive a short questionnaire and a specimen cup.

Sometimes the look on their face when you give them the cup is comical. They take it, turn it over and shyly ask, “Am I supposed to fill up this whole cup?”

It takes everything in the staff not to laugh, and they reply, “No, you are not expected to fill the cup. A typical semen sample is anywhere from 2-7 mL.” The prospective sperm donors are usually very relieved at that point, and most laugh. They all have to have a sense of humor about the process; it makes is more comfortable.

CLI BlogMost sperm banks do provide magazines or videos for the men, if they want them. They encourage the men to bring whatever they need to their appointments if the provided materials aren’t to their taste. The semen samples are produced through self-masturbation. As you can imagine, this is a sensitive topic, and not easy for a lot of the men to think about while being given a tour.

How Old is My Donor?

Written by Fairfax Cryobank Laboratory Director, Michelle Ottey, PhD.

One of the frequently asked questions of our client services representatives is, “how old is my donor?” Our sperm bank does not provide the date of birth or specific age of our donors to the patients. A date of birth is identifying information and we work to ensure the confidentiality of the donor identities. All of our donors are between the ages of 18 and 39 when donating. We follow this guideline based on the American Association of Tissue Banking (AATB) Standards because we are an AATB accredited Sperm Bank. Several other regulating agencies require this age range for sperm donation as well, such as NY State.

Various researchers have published data over the years that suggest that genetic defects in the sperm increase with age in men. This could lead to decreased fertility, increased chance of miscarriage and increased risk of some birth defects. Most of these adverse effects of age are found once the male reached middle age. (Relationship between advanced paternal age and male fertility highlights an impending paradigm shift in reproductive biology. Editorial in Press Jason R. Kovac, M.D., Ph.D., Ryan P. Smith, M.D., Larry I. Lipshultz, M.D., Scott Department of Urology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. Fertility and Sterility April 26, 2013)

Midwest Family Equality Conference

The Midwest Family Equality Council held their annual conference this past weekend, and once again I had the opportunity of attending. All too often in our efforts of recruiting donors and processing specimens, we rarely get so opportunity to see, much less meet any of the miracles.

This conference is geared towards the GLBT community and helping them to obtain more information to help build their family as well as find various outlets and community resources in the Midwest. I am pretty sure, based on my unscientific calculation we adults were outnumbered 2:1 by children. A pretty remarkable feat if I do say so myself considering the path most GLBT people need to take to build his or her family.

While it is a wonderful opportunity to meet potential new clients, nothing is more rewarding than a parent stopping by the booth with their child. This year I had to opportunity to meet several children that CLI helped to bring into the world. I was also able to touch base with parents who had teenagers; a strong testament of the longevity and success of CLI.

Due to the nature of our jobs, we often do not have the opportunity to see the lives we’ve touched. That is why I truly enjoy attending conferences where there is the chance I may get to reconnect with a parent who used CLI’s services. Thank you for sharing yourself and your family with me, I really do savor these experiences.

Join the Discussion

The CLI Family Forums are very active with people just like you that are trying to conceive using donor sperm. The topics on the forum range from serious medical concerns to mothering advice about raising children from donor sperm.

Some of the most popular topics include questions about what to do during the two week wait after insemination. Some of the posts are light hearted about which movies to watch to pass the time and what foods help with implantation. Other posts discuss the symptoms experienced and if that indicates a pregnancy or not.

So no matter where you are on your journey to parenthood, the CLI Family Forums have topics that will interest you. There are also specific sections for single mothers by choice, same sex couples, and couples with fertility issues. I highly encourage you to check it out and join the conversations.

Top 5 Tips to Help Select the Perfect Donor!

Selecting the ideal donor can seem like an overwhelming process. With their vast experience in helping clients through the process, our Client Services Team put together this helpful list of tips to simplify the process for you. Try them and see if they work for you!

1. Talk to your doctor about CMV & RH status.

Knowing if these matter in your situation will make the initial selection of the right group of donors easier.

2. Know your genetic screening results.

If you need a donor with certain testing, we will work with you. It may already be done, but best to know what you need up front so you can choose wisely.

3. Decide what characteristics matter to you.

Whether it is a certain height, eye color or ancestry that matters, chose those and come up with a select group of donors. If you have someone you would like the donor to resemble, consider providing us the photos and we’ll help with the match.

4. Start reviewing donor information on this select group.

All the donor profile information, childhood photos, audio interviews and silhouettes are available at no cost. Childhood photos are the most viewed item so go ahead and look at as many as you want. Looking for free makes it much easier!

5. Seek out advice and support from those who are having similar experiences.

You can find many resources online and if you participate, you can choose to remain anonymous. One option is to visit our CLI Family Forums to see what others are saying and ask your questions to a large group of like minded folks
